February hopes of Spring!

The shortest month of the year certainly isn't short on stuff to celebrate. Groundhog Day (Feb 2) evokes the promise of spring, but lingering cold weather makes a perfect excuse to cuddle on Valentine's Day (Feb 14). Add to this the crazy fun of Carnivale and Mardi Gras, and the killer sales of President's Day, and you have a pretty cool month. It's the International Month for boosting self-esteem. In addition, February is also American Heart Month.

But wait theres more! February starts the hope of spring and fashion begins to change its colors to lighter and brighter tones. This is the month to consider what your spring and summer styles will look like. Fashion for Spring is always colorful and inspirational and it makes you want to immediately purchase something bright and cheerful! The same feeling comes from the changes that spring brings to Hair & Makeup. With Spring around the corner you will want to be sure to plan a strategy to lead the way and head you in the right direction for Spring Fashion!

Some for the new trends I am seeing include the following:

The Spring Face: A strong brow, soft lip and little rouge. Be sure to add retro sunglasses, like the Cat-Eye frame, for a picture perfect Spring face

This month on February 19th from 2-5pm I am having a "Be your own Valentine" event. So maybe you did not get what you wanted or you just want to pick out what you really want. This will be an afternoon to pick your own beads and stones to create the perfect necklace, earrings, and bracelets for spring. Our guest jewelry designer will be Bobbi Kahn a local artist that I have featured in my salon during the last quarter of 2011. A Whole New Look For 2012!

The trend for 2012 is a range of beautiful caramel tones… from eyes to cheeks to lips.

We are seeing a beautiful focus on strong lips and softer eye colors - but lots of liquid liner!

• The cat eye is back.

• Lipsticks are matte and are standing out in many shades.

• Strong eyebrows are still making a statement with shades 1-2 darker than the natural brow.

New Year...New "Do"...New You!!!

Starting out the New Year often involves resolutions. Either that you need to lose weight, get organized, or start a workout regimen. It's a new year, a chance for a new beginnings, and there is no better way to begin it than with a brand-new image! There is great value in creating a fresh new look to match your face shape and hair texture. While you may be hesitant to commit to a total professional makeover, you will feel renewed and it will lift your spirits with a new look. And with simpler, more natural clothes and makeup in style, it won't break your budget.

Some people think that they need an expensive head-to-toe makeover to start a new year. Try taking baby steps and re vamp your haircut, hair color & style. Consider letting go of a dated look. It is time to at least modify the one you may have had for many years. Take into account that time spent on your hair and makeup should not take up a lot of your time. Consider letting a more natural softer style be your goal. Start the new year by scaling down your product inventory. Be realistic when disposing of your over stocked products. Whether it is hair care, body care, or makeup you probably have many items that have not been used at all this last year or for many years. The term "less is more" is true even in those departments. In the beauty industry and in the fashion world we are going towards more natural looks. Even foundations no longer have to cover your whole face, and are typically more sheer with moisturizers built in. Many contain sun screen and shimmer to them to diffuse line and wrinkles.Try to use it on the areas where you have something to conceal. Get a natural look by blending well. Then use a brush to lightly dust your skin with a face powder.

Start the New Year off by taking some time for yourself and pay attention to your image. After all it is the one thing that people see first, and you want to hold your head up high and not keep your head down so you do not miss any opportunities that may come your way!

Winter is upon us....

During the holidays you are probably seen by many friends, family and colleagues. You need to make sure you are showing up with healthy and rich looking hair! Here are some helpful hints to combat against dry and brittle seasonal hair. A healthy trim will start the season on a good note. A deep conditioning treatment is in your best interest to avoid a dry and damaged look. Call and book a conditioning treatment prior to a haircut service. Arriving a half hour early for this type of treatment will restore and hydrate your hair. Washing your hair during the winter months to frequently will lead to more damaged looking hair. Alternate washing your hair every other day but condition each time. I recommend Doyle Designed "Rehydrating Shampoo". It is designed to moisturize your hair and scalp, and is sulfate free so it is gentle on color treated hair. This will ensure healthy and shiny hair. Doyle Designed "Instant Conditioner" is a instant conditioner that will restore moisture and help to smooth the strands of your hair and will aid in combating winter static electricity. Rinse hair with a lukewarm water temperature not with hot water. Rinsing you hair with cool water at the end will help to lock in the moisture from your conditioner. Doyle Designed "Thermal Protectant" sprayed into hair after towel drying will help to protect your hair from the damaging effect of heat styling. Static in the hair can be helped with the right product. Applying Doyle Designed "Shine repair" will help to smooth fly away hair and add shine to dry hair. Always try to avoid leaving the house with wet hair. With the cold weather, air drying is not a good option. Since you find yourself grabbing the blow dryer more often, you must blow out your hair properly to avoid dry dull winter hair and overusing additional styling tools. Gently pat you hair dry with a towel after showering, removing any excess water. Brush and detangle your locks by gently brushing with a wide-tooth comb. Try blow drying on a medium heat setting so you are not burning your hair. Thoroughly dry your hair to avoid damage when wearing a winter hat. If you are wearing coats that have wool collars be sure to have a silk scarf or cotton scarf over the collar so you do not create friction and reduces the rubbing on your hairline which can result in damaged hair. Product Intervention Stop the Abuse!

Does your hair need help? Professional Hair Care Products can assist you in many ways. Whether you have fine limp hair or coarse and curly hair their is a product out there for you! A healthy lifestyle will mean healthier hair for you. Excessive stress, smoking, not exercising and not eating nutritiously are not healthy for your hair. It is more than just getting enough sleep. On the other hand abuse is in the hand of the beholder. How you use or overuse hair are products will definitely tell a tale. Hair products such as gel, mouse, hair spray can make certain hair textures worse, and can result in an unhealthy appearance. Avoid using hair styling products with alcohol which dries out naturally curly or textured hair. It is best to avoid the use of products that contain alcohol, as it can be drying to the hair. This is especially true for those of us with curly hair, which has the tendency to need all the moisture it can get. However, we often get a little baffled; because we see ingredients including the word ‘alcohol’ in many of the products we buy, including those that are labeled as conditioning products. The explanation is a fairly simple one: some alcohols can cause dry, frizzy hair while others can act to condition your hair! Avoid putting hair styling products directly on your scalp; if you put it on your scalp you'll clog the pores on your head. When using hairspray spray 10-12 inches from hair to prevent sticky hair and hairspray build up. Before entering a pool, wet your hair so your hair will soak up the initial water instead of the chlorinated water. When swimming where a cap to protect your hair from chlorinated water, if you choose not to wear a cap make sure you shampoo and condition your hair right after you are done swimming. If swimming a few times or more a week purchase anti chlorine products that come with a Shampoo Conditioner & demineralizer one product is Malibu Wellness products. Hot air can be damaging to your hair so when using a hair dryer use the cool setting. Don't leave the blow dryer in one spot for more than a few seconds, keep it moving and at a good distance away from your hair. To speed up the drying process, pat your hair dry with a towel and let the remaining moisture in your hair dry naturally. Gently use your fingers or a pick to untangle any knots while your hair is drying. Use a brush whose bristles are made from natural animal hairs, it is softer and more flexible, which means less damage will be done to your hair. Hair is most fragile when it is wet so avoid brushing or combing when it's wet, or else it will cause breakage. Wait until your hair is almost completely dry before brushing it. Use brushes/combs with widely spaced bristles/teeth and smooth tips. Sharp tooth combs can damage your hair, cause split ends, and scratch your scalp. To keep your brushes and combs clean, wash them weekly using soap or shampoo. Comb your hair to remove any tangles before brushing it. Begin by combing your hair gently at the ends to get any tangles out and work your way up to the base of your hair. Always brush/comb with a downwards stroke. Avoid using plastic brushes/combs which create static electricity. Buy shampoos & conditioners that match your hair type. Trial and error is the best way to find out what specific hair product is best for your hair. Shower with warm water; hot water can dry and/or irritate the scalp. It is important to wash your hair; shampooing removes dirt, dead skin cells, hair oils, any hair products you may put into your hair. When shampooing, rinse your hair out before applying any shampoo to remove any dust, dirt, and any other foreign items, then apply the shampoo onto your scalp and massage it gently with your finger tips and work your way outwards. After you are done make sure that you thoroughly rinse out your hair to remove any shampoo residue that may be left. Shampoo residue may dry your scalp/hair and or attract dirt. It is recommended that you only lather once to avoid drying your hair out. If you have oily hair, lathering again may stimulate your oil glands to create even more oil than normal.

Success is measured not only by our accomplishments, but also by our image. Respect the value of your first impression, and appeal to senses of others. People judge you within the first few minutes of meeting you. They make assumptions about who you are based on your looks and your clothing. Projecting a professional image is crucial to attaining success. People will take you more seriously if your look is polished and pulled together. Others are constantly observing your behavior and forming theories about your competence, character, and commitment. Try modifying your clothing, accessories, makeup and hair color to align with the season. For example go for lighter (in color and weight) clothing, hair and makeup in the spring and summer. In the fall and winter, gravitate toward darker and warmer colors of clothes, hair and makeup

Don’t wear your heart on your sleeve. Try not to let your emotions affect your appearance. Avoid dark colors when you are in a foul mood. Instead, choose bright and cheerful clothing and accessories to elevate your mood. If possible, try to keep a new clothing item or accessory in your closet for those times when you need a lift. It doesn’t have to be anything major; a new blouse, a new bracelet or a new pair of shoes will do. Do not cut the tag off until you are ready to wear the item; this will allow you to approach the day with a fresh outlook! There are plenty of books telling you how to "dress for success" and control your body language.

But keeping on top of your personal traits is only part of the story of managing your professional image.

Not taking time for yourself allows everyone around you to be taken care of, but leaves little time to address any of your needs, especially your image. Let’s face it, not only do you not take time for yourself, you often do not take time to update your current look. Whether it is professional, or personal, you tend to get stuck in an image that has not changed in many years. Having an image consultation on your current look could spark experiencing a new approach to your image. Make an appointment with your stylist to talk about a change of your current style.

Most stylists will, or should, welcome the opportunity to take the time to properly consult with you on the possibilities of a new style. Many times we will stay with a stylist for too long. Unless they are changing your look and a regular basis, every 6 months to a year, you may be in a rut. It might be a perfect time to go to someone else who will see you in a different way. It could be the best 15 minutes of time you have spent, allowing you to look forward to a change of color, cut, and or styling techniques. Even minor changes to a cut, or color system, will make you feel good.

For example a lot of people who have curly hair do not know how to style their hair in a curly look, so they continue to straighten their hair. Damaging the hair with all types of heating elements that only dry out curly hair and leave the strand looking rough. An alternate styling technique could give you some diversity, and create a look that would allow you to have a different style for a more casual occasion. A beauty industry professional is someone that can help you to understand the factors to consider for you to achieve a personalized style for you. Some of the factors to be considered are face shape, hair texture, hair color, and the time constraints you have for styling your hair.

The theory on face shapes is to make the face appear more balanced; the oval shape is the desired shape, and most flattering. A seasoned professional will adjust the cut to improve the visual balance of your face shape. Do not under estimate the impact of your silhouette, the side view, people see you from every angle, and often this is out of balance. Life's Lessons

My life experience has taught me that people often do not do the best at their jobs. I have tried to recognize whether it’s because they don't want to, don't care to.... or they can't.

This is just how life is for some people. Sometimes when they can't do their job or other responsibilities, it means they need more training, information, resources, or hope and guidance. Sometimes people just need someone to educate them.

People are sometimes left ignorant. Not that they do not desire to know something, it is that someone has not offered to take the time to teach, or mentor them. Sometimes when people don't do their job to a stellar level it is very often an attitude challenge or a defense mechanism to not let someone know that they are not fully aware of what either needs to be done, or what they themselves can do. Therefore they may exude an attitude that is not conducive to a great experience.

The process of mentoring and educating is inspiring and will make people to feel good about themselves, confident and therefore want to do their best. It is also a way to nurture yourself and know that you have inspired strength and confidence in another human being. Whatever you are doing you need to continue to hone your craft and update your strategies, knowledge, and techniques so that you continue to have a prosperous life, not only financially but spiritually. Inspire someone today!
